H oil filter spring

Does a Farmall H have a spring on the top of the filter, or is it only held in place by the housing?

You wouldn't need a spring with very much pressure. Maybe an inch in
diameter. Two inches tall that you could squish with your fingers.
Just enough to keep the filter in its bottom hole. Let us see what the
other guys think. If you take your old car filter apart you will find
something sort of the same idea but it will be stronger to maintain a
certain pressure. As I said ,you just want to hold the filter down.
Don't know if it is original, but is an interesting idea.

No. There is not any spring in there.

Sadly, to add to what the other guys have told you, it's simply a "bypass filter" meaning that a portion of the output of the oilpump is fed to the filter, then is dumped back into the crankcase.

The remaining output flow of the oilpump is directed to the bearings without ANY filtration at all ('cept the oilpump pickup screen).

Dunno WHY it took so long for major mfg's to go to a "full flow" oil filter setup and filter the oil going to the bearings.
