H Overrunning Clutch

I have a 51H with a 5 ft. Bush Hog shredder. I would like to improve the safety of this equipment, and myself, by adding an overrunning clutch to the PTO drive train. I have looked at clutches on the internet and find they range from about $50 to about $300. With a price range like this it is hard to make a choice. I would appreciate some advice on the purchase of a clutch. Note...I do not do a lot of day-after-day heavy shredding if the use factor makes a difference in your recommendations.

As usual, thanks in advance for the great help I always get from the experience shared on this website.

Stay healthy...stay safe!!!

You could buy six of the $50 models for the price of one of those $300 ones, so if you are concerned about the less expensive ones wearing out quickly, think about that. As long as it works, I would go for the inexpensive one.

I agree with your observation on economics. I am hoping someone with real operating experience will comment. Besides, given the current state of our country, I am working hard to not support Chinese products, which many of YT's are. I will call them on Monday to ask about their product sourcing.

I have used on for years on my JD430, Probably close to 15. I think it was a cheap one. If you keep them greased there is not much to fail

Have one that was long enough ago to cost forty two and change. Use on rotary mower and 7.5 wide finish mower every year and no failure yet. Did grind a extra notch in a spline so PTO shaft would slide fully on length of spines and lock.

I had to buy one, and got one of those Indian ones, bright and shiny. After just a few hours, the thing began to twist in half. Before it failed I got a Hub City unit, just like the ones I used to use. Has not twisted yet. And I treat them very gently. Hub City is highly recommended.

Do yourself a favor, and buy one like this:

The quick release sure is handy, and it lets you take it off when not using the pto. A big plus for me. I have one just like it setting on the shelf. Ever since I got the 300 with IPTO, I don't use it.
