H Quit Running

I was cutting the field and my H just quit running. The oil pressure was good, the temp was good. The tractor will turn over but will not start. I am sure I am getting fuel because I flooded it while trying to restart.

You need fuel and spark to make it run. Since it appears you have fuel, check for spark. Greg

That kind of failure is often a coil failure. If the tractor starts after it has cooled down it says "coil". A test for coil is if the tractor gets warm and quits, pour cold water over the coil and if it starts right up you pretty much have isolated the problem.

Possibly the ignition switch went bad, but that usually doesn't just happen all at once. I'm more inclined to think that a wire has come loose. Check all the connections at the back of the switch and at the coil and have a look inside the distributor also.

That probably has a magneto not a distributor doesn't it? First thing I'd do is unhook the wire to the switch,then when that doesn't work,put a new condensor in it. I'd give 50/50 odds that the condensor will solve the problem.

if that unit is magneto driven, check the maggy kill wire, and condensor.. and heck.. check the points to.. also check the external wires to the plugs.. and to see if the plugs are fouled.

This does sound like loss of spark.

Really would help if you told us if it has a mag or a distubutor. Any how it could be a good number of things that went wrong. A wire may have come loose or the rotor went bad, yep it can happen because I have had it happen to me. Points could have slipped or the coil went bad but most of the time if its a coil it will start running bad before it just stops working

I will add what happened to my H that had been converted to 12 volt.
It had a ballast resistor and as I was driving it back from where I bought it, about a 10 mile drive, it started to spit & sputter then died about 1/2 mile from my neighbors shop.
We towed it the rest of the way and it turned out that that porcelain ballast resistor had cracked from vibration and was shorting out the ignition.

Thanks for all your input, I should of said it does not have a mag and is under a 6 volt system. I will check the coil, it is cool this morning, I will try to start it, and I will also look first for any lose wiring, starter switch looks good, I just put a new battery in it and cleaned all the connections, ran like a top until the other day. It is spark related, I just don't want to remove and replace until I hit the magic part. I will follow up
