H Wiring Question

I have a 51H that has a voltmeter instead of an ammeter and a 12V alternator conversion. The light switch is 3-position O/D/B. Currently the lights are on all the time. How do I rewire so that the lights are off in the O switch position and on in the D/B positions. Does anyone have a schematic for this setup that I can follow to correct the wiring. I can only find one with an ammeter, not a voltmeter.

I would think you only need a hot wire to switch and then connect light wires to other side. Volt meter or amp meter should not make a difference on lights. A simple ohm meter check for continuity on switch would show where to connect wires.

Ammeter or voltmeter has nothing to do with the lights staying on. As well as incorrect wiring, it is also possible the switch is bad; I have seen switches fail on (closed) as well as off (open). Some checking with an ohmmeter can tell.

I would have to search a while to find the exact diagram you need. This together with a Jim’s should do it. On this one pretend there is no ammeter at that spot the wire just splits off 3 ways. 1 to the Alt, 2nd to the Ignition switch and 3rd to the light switch/ fuse. Disregard the L & S terminal circuits off the Alt. that is a 3 wire alternator. Your volt meter connects to be powered only when the ignition switch is on. Your starter switch is different so the wire shown going to the ammeter in this diagram will come off the terminal on the starter switch that the battery cable is on, not the one to starter. This is a three position switch used on older IH tractors.
Does the back of your switch look like this ?
Number 1 is power into the switch.
Number 2 has power in both dim and bright.
Number 3 is for head lights if you want the dim and bright function.

An alternate way to wire them and what I do:

Number 1 is power into the switch.
Number 2 is headlights.
Resistor is removed.
Tail light wire is attached at screw by Delco Remy
Number 3 is rear light wire.

Headlights will be on in both D and B position.
Tail lights will be on in D position.
Rear light will be on in B position.
Flashing lights are run off separate switch.

Rodney most Places want the red side of a light facing back and the amber forward. You could have the amber back if it is only a turn signal.

Thanks to all who responded so quickly. You guys are great.

Using the schematic, I traced the wires and found a wire jammed against the resistor coil that had shorted out due to the resistor heat. Once I eliminated the short, everything worked as it should.
