I rewired my H today, started right up.. I pulled the battery cable off and she keep running.. So I take it was charging. Someone told me to polarize the gen, so I touched the a on the gen to the batt on the vr, small spark.. Now when I crank it and runs, pull the batt cable off it dies. What did I do?

Wat you did is correct if the tractor was shut off. (it would not spark if it was running as those two terminal locations would be connected inside the VR. it is not good policy to remove battery cables from a running tractor (OR anything) due to possible loss of voltage control, and damage to the system. VR particularly. A meter applied to the battery terminals when it is running will tell you the voltage. Should be 7 to 7.2 volts. The charge shown on the amp meter is also important. If the voltage does not go up. I suspect issues with the voltage regulator. Use the link to get started in the analysis. Use a meter with a needle type display rather than a digital meter. Jim

One should never use the stupid pull the battery cable off test to see if it is charging. Do so you risk your life an the charging systems life to boot. When you do that the VR sees a dead battery so it goes to max charge and when it dose that unsafe voltage for you and the system can be had and if you get across the battery cable and ground it can/will kill you
