H3 allis followup ?

My buddy and I are buying the H3 I asked about last week. It has a shuttle style lever for forward and reverse. Does it have to be clutched to change direction??

I had an H3 loader/backhoe years ago and if I remember correctly the forward/reverse clutch packs are oil bath and there is also a torque converter so you do not need to use the clutch or reduce engine rpms when using the shuttle. I tended to use what I would call a 'soft hand' when I pulled the control into the opposite direction to reduce any shock to the drive train. This would be similar to feathering the clutch when starting off in a vehicle with a manual transmission. It was a great little machine but twice inexperienced operators let it get going too fast on a steep downhill slope and it exploded the torque converter.

My HD3 has only a mechanical clutch that runs in oil for the shuttle clutch, no torque converter. But, Don is right - no clutching is needed, just ease into it in either direction, and be sure not to ride it too much - once you're moving, lock it in so you don't burn and warp the plates.

Did you ever get the shuttle problem solved?

Still haven't got it home yet to look at. Hopefully this weekend. If God looks favorably it will only be the lever slipping on the shaft.

You could be correct about no torque converter. It was about 30 years ago and I had also run a JD crawler and Case loader backhoe around the same time and it seems that one of them had a torque converter. If so it was the clutch pack that exploded from excessive rpm.
