Hand crank 8n

I will be building a hand crank for my 8n. Would be handy for repair work valves etc. I see how they are built. I looked in at the crank pulley and I see a big screw driver slot. Guess I will try some different configurations.

Likely, at one time the tractor had a loader with a crankshaft-driven hydraulic pump and a special front crankshaft pulley was installed with provisions for attaching a shaft coupling.

The original "ratchet head" bolt was replaced with a special thin flat slotted-head bolt to allow clearance for the coupler.

This very site offers a replacement ratchet-head bolt https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/2N6319A1_Crankshaft-Cranking-Rachet_29103.htm.

I'm NOT sure if you could install the OEM-style bolt along with the aftermarket pulley that is likely installed on your tractor, though.

Fine to have a hand crank to turn the engine without ignition on for maintenance purposes, but...using hand crank to start one may hurt you. When hand cranks were in use, magnetos were in use and had an impulse mechanism that retarded the spark, which later battery powered distributor/coil systems do not have, so hand cranking one where advance spark occurs may very well result in a kickback that has broken fingers, hands, and arms. Be careful my friend.

OEM cranks can be found on fleabay if you know what you are looking for. Every manufacturer had a crank back in the day, cars, trucks, tractors too. Ask an old Fordson
man how many times he broke his arm. There are drawings to make your own on the 'other' Ford N-Tractor web site in HOW-TO's. You can also get new, repop ones from
nnalert's ---see the LINK. There were included in a shipping kit with every new tractor but now are pretty much a novelty item and like JMOR said, handy to have when
rebuilding an engine and you need to turn the crank with no power. Note: The D-I-Y one offered shows 5/8 dia bar stock but the original hand crank was 11/16 diameter.
If you have a grille guard (bumper) the crank will not allow to use. Plan to store it somewhere on your 8N? Good luck.

Good safety advice JMOR gave you. If you go ahead and get the OEM ratchet head and maybe a pulley, you can also purchase a hand crank.

When I got my N,there was no crank with it. I had an old crank that was with my '48 Dodge truck some years
ago. It works perfectly and has saved me a bit of trouble when the battery was failing and I didn't have
time[or extra money] to go get a new one. You will need a ratchet style crank pulley bolt so that your arm
doesn't get broken when the engine starts. I also made a rod with a pin in the end to use with my 3/4 heavy
duty drill for compression testing, etc that works well.

Ya, I don't need any broken body parts. I will forget the hand crank.

Well it looks like my post was deleted by the admins here for some lame reason -was told certain members don't like my posts so complain. Whatever. So if you want to
have one for nostalgia and to use when you turn the crank when rebuilding engine, get one but I don't know why you want to use it to hand start the engine. One of the
reasons FORD developed the electric starter motor was to eliminate the dangerous hand crank.

Maybe lame to you but not to a significant number of others. I don't go to the admins, I put it right in the thread.
