Hard shifting 4010

Got my wifes grandpas 4010 last week. Starts real easy and sounds really good. First experience with the powershift 12 speed. Seems awful hard to get into gear. Got the shifter stuck for a couple minuites once. My father in law unloaded it off the trailer for me, he didn't seem to have the problems of course he was very familiar with the gear pattern. If these are hard to get in gear is it big money to get them adjusted?

No 12 speed trans offered in a 4010 or 4020. no powershift trans on a 4010. Your shifting problem sounds as if there's slack in the shifter drums in the dash. They get worn and separate apart a little and cause hard shifting on a Syncro-range trans. Powershift trans is a straight shift 1 to 8th gear or 1 to 4 reverse

I guess I was thinking 8 forward and 3 reverse, and that still doesn't equal 12 gears. Its a 4010 from 1961, with the 3 shift stations and the ability to shift on the move within the station. Thank you for the replys.

Do you have a dragging clutch? If it won't fully release, the syncronizers won't allow you to shift into gear. This happened on my 4010 once, split the tractor and cleaned the gunk out of the clutch disk area and then worked fine.

Just overhauled the shift linkages on a 3010 Wheel backhoe/loader, which is the same as what is being described here for the 4010. Replaced all of the bushings and thrust washers (available from Deere), and had to do a little weld buildup and machining on the shift quadrants. The wear in the original bushings and quadrants allowed the quadrants to flop around so that the gearshift quadrant latch wouldn't reliably engage the shift quadrants. As a result, I could get into all 8 forward speeds most of the time, but only high reverse. Works well now in all gears. Had to remove the cowl and instrument panel to get access. Good luck

Gene, is there a manual or other publication that shows the the wear parts you are discussing? I would like to study this and
then try to change them out.

Matt, I used the John Deere Parts Catalog PC736, which I bought from John Deere Parts on-line and downloaded onto my hard drive. That number is for the 3010WHEEL version used in the backhoe/loader. It's probably a different number for the agricultural model 3010. I don't remember exactly how I accessed it, but perhaps you could start at "http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt
" and use the "Contact Us" button there to talk with a real person. Good luck. Gene

As Gene stated go to JDparts.com,type in 3010 in model search, you'll see 690 - 3010 Grove & Orchard, Row-Crop Standard & Utility Tractors (s.n. -049,999) - 16May11 go to "sectional index",scroll down to "power train" and click on it,then scroll down to "20 - GEAR SHIFTER CONTROLS" and there's the shifter parts schematic.
