Hard start - Perkins

Helping a friend who just bought a 1987 JBC backhoe with a Perkins 4.236 diesel engine (understand it is
like a MF engine).

Got it running, however, after a few days it will not start and my friend has started to add a mixture of
2 cycle oil and gas to the injector pump (via air cleaner) for it to start. It will run ok but once
turned off, it will not start again without the mixed fuel added first.

Question -- where and how can we start looking for the problem????

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. David

(quoted from post at 06:52:54 02/03/21) Usually hard starting when hot after a five minute shut down means the injection pump hydraulic head is severely worn..

To go along with what Dieseltech posted. Looking back at your posts on this before you said he put the head back on (it was off when he got it). You said you torqued it for him. Did he adjust the valves after that? At that time no filters had been changed. Have the fuel filters been changed yet? If he uses WIX/NAPA filters he needs to be sure the sealing O-rings are in the housing head, not down in the groove of the filter, if it uses the CAV type elements.

Don't overlook the possibility of air gettting into the fuel sytem, however small. Had that problem with the diesel engine in my truck. If there is a diesel leak in the lines when the engine is running, it will suck air in when the engine is stopped making it very hard to start.
