hard starting when hot

51 8n, side, 12v
wondering what would make tractor hard to start when hot. several parts are new, not throwing parts at it because of the hard starting, just things it needed, such as new plugs, wires, coil, resistor, condenser, points, fuel tank and all screens cleaned. choke or not doesn"t seem to help when starting hot. i searched for "hard starting" and "hard starting hot" and got zero results. thanks for any thoughts.

Why do you have a resistor w/ a side coil?

What kind of resistor?

That could easily be your problem.

Get a coil from NAPA that doesn't need a resistor, p/n IC14SB.

When hot check for spark and what it both looks like and how far it will jump. Should be a blue/white spark and jump a 1/4 inch gap or more. You said it has new points did you set them at the correct gap of 0.025??? Also try this. Remove the gas cap carefully and see if that helps. If the gas is boiling or has a vacuum in the tank then the gas tank vent is clogged and will cause you odd problems. Or you may have a new bad condenser seen that many times also

I'll have to check the spark when it's hot next.

the vent on the gas tank is clear, when i cleaned the tank i removed it from the hood and sanded and painted it, after painting i made sure it wasn't clogged w/ paint.

the coil i have says "use w/ external resistor," so i checked the resistance of the coil before i bought it, it was 1.8, and the highest ceramic resistor they had was 1.2, so i figured it falls withing the range i read in one of the articles on here somewhere. the tractor has been running so, so much better after replacing the coil and resistor, i looked at the back of the old resistor and it was broken inside, which had caused me to break down while mowing. (0 volts to coil) but even though it runs perfectly, if i shut it off while it's hot, it just ain't gonna start until it cools.

and it doesn't start running poorly when it gets hot either, it always runs fine.

choking doesn't seem to make any difference.
