Harry Ferguson TEA 20

I am looking to buy a tractor and have found this Harry Ferguson TEA 20. I believe it is a 53 or 54. The asking price is $1200.00 and it comes with a set of snow and ice chains. I am new to this. What should I look for?

You don't say where you are located but from the reference to snow chains, I suspect northern USA or Canada. In Australia, US$1,200 would be a [u:30bdf4c73b]very[/u:30bdf4c73b] reasonable price for a good TEA20-85. (US$2,000 plus in Australia).

Not much goes wrong with the Standard engine TEA20 if they are well maintained. Check the engine, clutch, transmission and hydraulics are all working and no unusual noises. Check the engine and transmission oil for colour and water, don't be surprised to find traces of water in the transmission if the tractor has been parked outside. Check the radiator and cooling system. You could do a cylinder compression check and check the spark plugs for colour (dark straw colour) and absence of wetness.

Don't expect a 50 year old tractor to be perfect!

Prices, ect. are all based on location. But in General $1200.00 US or Canadian. Is a fair price. As Bob point out they are slightly hight in Aust. Dollars. But in gerneral in the mid-west US and Canada that is a fair price. This all assumes that it is in decent running and working order.

One of the big considerations for me in buying equipment is do I have to spend money to bring it to the condition I want it, and if so, how much will that be. Things like tires, exhaust pipe, radiators, fuel tank, battery, etc, can add up to a chunk of change. I know because in one year of owning my TEA20 I have put more money into it than the purchase price, which was only about $700 US. Probably have spent double that on all that I have done to it, but it hadn"t been maintained for years before I bought it. Keep in mind that the purchase price might be a lot less than what you end up spending after it"s yours. Also does it come with stay and sway bars, which came with the tractor when it was new?
