Has anyone installed one of the 12 volt conversion kits that YT parts shows for an H Farmall? I'm considering doing it to the H I have my loader on.

The 6 volt charging system quit working, it has a brand new 6 volt battery I could use on one of my other H's, and I have a good 12 volt battery I could use. So, instead of spending time and money fixing the 6 volt system I may as well convert it.

Has anyone done one of these? Pitfalls? Advice?

Did not use a kit. It was simple enough to run new wires. When i mounted the alternator i flipped the generator bracket and then built a “arm” below the alternator pulley using a small idler pulley on arm. Allows easy belt tensioning. Hood fits fine. Used a gm 10 si.

A serious question : I’d like to know how hard the starter kicks in on a 12 volt IH H.
Not all that much harder than a 6v. The painted H I had years ago was 12v & that really didn't sound any harder on the ring gear than one that is 6v. I've pulled the batt cable on my current H to kick it over with 12v from the truck, also with no problem.

It's not an H.
But I have a 49 Ferguson with a 6 volt Lucas starter. I converted it to 12 volt in 1975 and the starter has never gave me any problems.

Although not for an H Farmall, I bought a YT kit for a 1950 8N. It was complete, decent instructions, and worked fine the remainder of the time I owned the Ford. Got the kit to remedy the previous owners cobbled up 12V conversion attempt.

Goose, I have converted a lot of tractors over the years.
Never had a problem.
Always modified the brackets myself for the alternator.
Not hard to do.
Never had any problems with starter drives breaking because of it.
The only thing I do extra is put a master cutoff on the negative cable.
I think all old tractors should have that.

Richard, what's your reasoning for the cutoff. I'm curious.

I have seen an alternator put a slight drain on a battery.
Plus, I don't worry about a rat or a squirrel chewing on wires.
My tractors are all under cover but open sided cover.

WE put a new starter on Dad's H with the same big cables and it broke the drive in a week. I tried a smaller about 4 ga wire and it works great with no problems now for a few years . Geo in Th mentioned he had doen that to a C or some other smaller IH tractor. Dad tried to tell me it would not get enough juice to start. I said well it 's not working well this way .He didn't say a thing when it worked well . I would just lighten uo the wire size if you are worried about it.

I used their kit for an M. Easy to install, just needed a little work on the bracket.
I ordered the kit. I'll probably study the instructions thoroughly before I go to work on it.

The thing is, with the loader on it, that H is a PITA to work on. If I run it in my shop; and run the loader all the way to the ceiling it might not be too bad.
