You can't find a worse place to find the information that you are looking for. You will get a lot of differing, conflicting, mostly hearsay information. You should go tom your local NYS registry.

It's open to the cops interpretation of the laws.!! one cop will tell you on thing, next will be different. Act like an illegal , run trash and say , me no comprehenda " and you'll be fine.!! :D

not how i behave crossing into quebec, they check everything from fuel to certificates and run you over a scale, i understand now we must have dot numbers on truck now

In most states you don’t need a DOT number until you cross a state line.
Not true for New York. If you are over 10,000 lbs and are a business; this could be a lawn cutting service hauling lawn mowers; the second you pull out your driveway you need a DOT number.

I’m not really up to date with Canada rules but their trailer size is compatible with the states so 53 feet is legal.
I don’t believe you can take a 57 foot up there but you can’t run a 57 foot east of the Mississippi in the states so you won’t have a trailer that size.

What Canada MAY require if you are hauling for hire is something similar to our ICC number or as it is called today the MC number. This number shows you have the authority to haul for hire.
They may also require you to have your truck plated for Canada if you haul for hire.

Like I said I’m not really up to date with Canada rules. Just trying to give you questions to ask you may not have thought of. Your best bet is to call the border station and ask them what you need in advance so you can be prepared.

If all you are doing is hauling cows to and from your farm then you should qualify for the farm exemption in your state. Crossing an international border most likely changes the rules again.
Biggest thing Canada and the USA is going to be looking for in your case is health papers on the cows as well as the cleanliness of your truck and trailer.

yes which would be sent to the vet at the inspection station before i head through, making shure all things are correct, still what rules at customes would change, having dot numbers on the truck, besides cleanlines of truck and trailer

The border is subject to the cop on duty at the time for the most part. I'm glad i have not crossed in 20 years and probably never will now.

I'm not sure what all the requirements are for entering Canada, because my employer handles that. I do know, you better have your ducks in a row, and none missing. Bosses son hauled a load because I was off, and they needed the product. The front differential grenaded right in the Southboud crossing (that's a whole story of it's own.) They had a spare tractor, so they got it set up (they thought), and sent me North the next day. I cleared the scale, North of the border, picked up my load, had to pull into the Nordell scale, Southbound. The light came on, "Park, bring papers." A very nice agent says" I see no permit for you to haul in Canada.. Do you realize that is a Felony?" I swallow my heart, and tell her the story, and that my boss thought they had done everything. She said something was missed, and gave me the Ministry of Transport number, and told me to contact my office, and get it corrected. After setting for over an hour, I got a call from the office, that they are emaling me the permit. Verizon and Rogers networks decide that this is the day, to not co operate. Finally I went back inside, and explained to the agent that they were trying to send it, but it wasn't coming through. She went to the computer, and found it, and said, you're good to go, here's a copy. I thanked her for being so courteous. She smiled and said, "i'm just making sure or laws are obeyed."

well i dont haul commercially, looking at buying a few bred heifers, registered out of Quebec, to Ny....so as long as i comply with animals certs what other problems these days might i encounter besides tarrifs.... yeah diesel; fuel in que, 1.70/litre there...

The pump price there is pretty much the same as here. The problem is that the liter is only 1/4 of a gallon. The US has pretty much the cheapest gas in the world.
