Have I got this right (ignition circuit)?

Hi-

Please tell me if I'm headed in the right direction. I'm trying to get 3.5 amps at the points for a '46 2n, front mount, 12v system. I have a coil that is 1.5 ohms according to my analog multimeter with fresh battery installed.
That, with the OEM ballast resistor, equals 2.5 ohms, right? 14.5v/2.5amps=5.8amps. It's my understanding that this will cause me problems. I can add the ceramic resistor
they send with a "12v" coil, giving me 3.5 ohms. 14.5v/3.5ohms=4.1 amps. This is still too much amperage, right? Do I need 1.5 ohms more than the OEM ballast
resistor and the coil I have can muster? Or will 4.1 amps be ok?

Thanks for your help.

Send the coil back. You paid for a 12 volt coil and they sent you a 6v coil. The coil should have 2.5 ohms or more internal resistance.

I agree with Bruce 100%. Your logic is right on, but why add so many components that can and probably will give you a headache in troubleshooting later.

At least get what you paid for and wire it up as original.

I see that you used 14.5 volts in your figures. make sure you get enough amps at 12 volts or less for starting.

e is alright, that is what the temperature dependent OEM ballast resistor is all about.
