Only remember seeing one used by my father when loading out loose stacked hay by hand onto the truck when I was very young. I was amazed at what a nice straight cut it made in the stack. Cut across to the depth of the knife, load out down to that point, then cut another piece. I have one in my barn.

Saw that hay knife video and thought that would be just the ticket for getting round bales broken down enough to feed in the narrow mangers of our barn. Paid way too much for one at an auction, just to get it, because I had never seen one for sale locally before....

Well, ever since I paid way too much for that one, there have been PILES of them for sale, and they don't bring much money. There must have been 10 of them at the Canandaigua Steam Pageant consignment auction.

My scythe is for clearing small brush. Reaping scythes have a much longer blade. I forget where it was now but there is a video on the net that shows a contest between a guy using a scythe and a guy using a weed whacker. They were mowing equal patches of weeds. The stuff was like between two and three feet high. Each guy had a section about 12 feet wide by about 30 feet long. Believe it or not, the guy with the scythe beat the weed whacker. He actually beat the crap out of him.
