Hay in again

Well I got the 2nd crop of alfalfa in and now the barn is full, just enough room for the fourwheeler and skidsteer. Allan will be proud, tractors and equipment have set outside. 2 wagons full and tarped. First cut is all sold and gone, so now shuld I set on this till Nov. or sell now for a few $ less?

You need to load a big truck and bring that hay to Tennessee. 50 lb. bales of mixed grass are selling for $8.00 per bale. Alfalfa is going for $9.00 and more.

This drought in the mid-South has really hurt farming.

The question is , what does it cost to run a 18 wheeler from syracuse ny to tennesse ? Lots of hay up here.

how many miles ya figurn here as for the actual cost of operation on a largecar ya had better figure about 1.25-35 a mile maybe more as i have not figured the cost lately . then ya have to figure in drivers wages.

What is hay worth in your part of MN? I don't know what it is selling for currently here, but I'm thinking with the severe drought in much of MN we are living on only the 1st cutting. I think some folks are going to turn around in Dec & Feb & find there is little to be had, and will pay more then. But, just my guess. Milk is bring a good paycheck, so dairy will keep buying....

I end up with 3000 or so bales in my barn this year, but not much of that is 2007 cutting. I still think I might have a pretty good value there come winter - normally I don't sell any hay, but a few less cattle & the mild winters I've been letting them graze cornstalks. Bought some land this winter that has 5 acres of hay meadow on it, and suddenly the barn is full.....

I live in Southeast TN and fortunately we have plenty of hay for ourselves and some to sell. We have some real good hay (first cutting) that we are selling. They are small squares even though the quality of the hay is good the bales could be a little better. We had some problems with the baler that have been fixed now but when we baled them the bales were loose or a little light. We are getting 4.00 a bale and we can afford to sell about a 100 or so right now maybe more later. I am in the middle of cutting second cutting now and I am doing all small round bales with it. There is a guy that is interested in the second cutting if that falls through I will approximately 50 to 100 small round bales for sale.

Based on old's estimate of costs, it's probably 1000 miles from Syracuse to Nashville. At $1.35 per mile, round trip would be about $2,700.00. If a driver would accept $800.00 for the run, that would equal about $3,500.00 for the round trip.

I think that a typical hay bale would occupy about 10 cu. ft. of space (1.5 X 1.5 X 4 ft.). So, how much space do you suppose is in the back of a van? Could a van hold 800 bales?

If so, the cost of delivery would end up being $4.38 per bale. The cost to buy the hay in NY would probably be around $3.00 per bale, so that doesn't leave much room for profit for the guy who is buying and hauling the hay even if he could sell it in Tennessee for $8.00 per bale.

Dang. I sure need hay.

Please send me an email with a name of a town near where you are located. I have a 16 ft. trailer and 3/4 ton pick up. I think I can haul about 75 bales safely. I'd be interested in buying some hay if you are interested in selling.

Second cutting has gone from $3.00 in field to 3.50 delivered 10 miles from the farm. I loaded with the grapple and used a dump box to unload. They put it away. I would still take 3. at the farm if they do the loading off the tarped wagons or for "take it all".
Friend is delivering to Duluth for 4.50 same quality hay.

You should be able to get 100 on there at least. I delivered two loads of 132 today on mine. Just use good ratchet straps on the ends and rope on the middle and they won't go anywhere.
