Hay Production

I have what for me is a stupid question since I am surrounded by them but I never seem to be out when its cut (work graveyard and sleep into the mid-afternoon).

What types of equipment are used in the production of hay other then a baler and a brillion seeder? What are the different forms of cutting the hay? What are their advantages and disadvantages of each?

Forms of cutting.

Plain old sickle mower. Cheapest and easiest mower to maintain.

Mower Conditioner. Sickle mower with rollers to compress the stems to dry quicker.

Disc mower. Faster and easier cutting than the above but no conditioning of stems.

Disc Conditioner. The best but more costly and higher HP requirements. Cuts fast and compresses the stems.

You need at least two balers they brake down a lot. You need at least 2 or 3 Mowers depending on what you are mowing (a mower condition is bet but not essential) you do need different sizes as gates will depend on which one you will use. A Swather is nice but expensive only if you are going to do a lot of hay on large fields. You will need a couple of rakes type depends on what you like I use the wheel type because that is what I have.
Balers come in all kinds and sizes it all depends on what you are going to do with the hay. Even small square balers are not not all the same I have an IHC 46 and a New Holland the IHC 46 will make nice 50 lbs bales the NH makes larger 60 to 80 lb bales.
You basically need to look at what you are doing what type and size bales you want and how much hay you are going to bale.
Hey they make round square and the new highly compressed bales in sizes from 20 lb. to 1 ton

Something to plant with, everything from notil drills, through all combinations of tillage tools, and broadcast seeders or as you mentioned Brillionn seeders. Mowing equipment disc, drum, sickle, and all combinations of conditioners; Rakes, tedders, windrowers, inverters; and then balers from round to square, to big square.

Personally, (for hay) I own a disc mower, two bar rakes, a tedder, round baler, square baler, 3 flat wagons, 3 tractors (one with front end loader), and a skid loader. Tillage tools, I have an ancient plow, a chisel plow I rent, and a disc, plus a sprayer available if needed. If conventional tillage I rent a brillion seeder, if notil I rent a notill drill. At my dads place, he has a duplicate of everything (same makes and models) except the sprayer, wagons, and skid loader.

I am a Mechanic for Continental Airlines in Phoenix. I have been with them for 16 years now. I have a Allis Chalmers WD and my IH 656 which I just bought. There is another mechanic at work that has a Massey Harris 50 (I think I cant recall the exact model).
