Ok got running gear and that is about it. Order bed lumber (white oak) and beams. Need a big box of big carriage bolts this locks and nut, just need to go get. rims at tire store for used tires. With running gear can what looks to be u- channel steel sheet metal side edging. It has stake pockets in it? it is about 4 inches all three sides and has little tabs by some of the holes. It is in pretty good shape but not sure how to use it. Will post pictures when I get home. Little help?

Always interesting to hear about oak wagon beds. In the NW where I live if you used oak to build something it would go in the living room as a coffee table

Here too, oak is impossible to afford, unless you cut it off your own property and even then you could sell it for more than a hay rack is worth. We get southern pine shipped up to here for a hay rack.

Anyhow, will be interesting to see what the metal trim stuff is you got, can't quite visualize it from your description.

Here the floor rots out every 15 years or so, if you put tin or aluminum over the top of the stringers before nailing/bolting the floor on it, the stringers will have that tin roof over them and last for about 5 or 6 different floors. If you don't cover the stringers, the dust and moisture collect in the spaces between the floor boards and rot the stringers down in the same 15 years.

white oak is good but southern yellow pine is a little stronger and a lot lighter. you can get it treated at your lumber yard.

Paul,

You are so right about protecting the tops of your stringers. I wish I had seen your post about 6 or 7 years ago. I rebuilt my hay wagon using oak stringers and planks. The screws that I used on the planks are popping out of the stringers due to deterioration of the stringers. I need to scab on some wood on the side of the stringers and re-screw some the planks.

I am just about done with one.
I used three Fir 2*10's on each side for stringers.
Covered with ice and water.
4*4's 24" on center over stringers with ice and water on top.
1" Oak planks over top for deck.
All Material I had on hand.

It does not appear to be widely known but foundation grade lumber is much more heavily treated and is usually Southern yellow pine.
Very strong.

If I was going to a lumber yard I would build it out of foundation grade not deck treated. Absolutely will not rot and much much stronger.
I believe this is what you often see on equipement trailers. Foundation grade.

Big draw back is the expensive fasteners and bolts as modern treated lumber is so corrosive.

I would never even consider oak for a wagon bed due to the over weight, yellow pine only. Cotton wood if avaible. And a lot of factory beds were made with that steel rubrail on the sides and those holes were for stakes for the grain sideboards the same as a lot of truck beds. I grew up in the horse-small tractor era and the difference in weight would have ment putting 3 head of horses on instead of a team.

this help at all? dimensions are 3 3/4" deep 3 1/8" across the back.

Ice and water shield is a good idea Carpenter - I use aluminum break metal, but I like your idea better. Larch seems to work good for me - tough, but not too heavy

16' long sheet metal edging? u channel 3 1/8" across the back and 3 3/4" deep with stake pockets and little tabs as shown in pics any idea how to put it on or use it or even if it goes with the wagon running gear?

Pictures help... I'm not sure that channel iron is original. Looks like it's been there a while for sure. Not sure how that was intended to be used... ??? Puzzle to me for sure. Keep us posted on the progress.... Maybe post a picture of the whole thing?
