Haybine question

I cut 13 acres with the 200 and the new cab. As i was finishing up the last few pasts. the neighbor came out and stoped me and said he wanted his 10 acres cut and baled for him. It wouldn’t be a problem if the haybine wasn’t such a piece of junk it need two new sprockets and the new drive chain and a bunch of new grauds and sections. I don’t own it but my landlord lets me use and wants me to buy it. It’s a ih 990 9ft. So my question is do I buy it and fix it or there a ford haybine down the road that hasn’t been used in 10 years. Do i go buy that or do wait to buy something else my budgets is not enough for a new Hollander so that’s of the table. I want an olive haybine one a 309 allis to match the 200. I’ll post some videos and pick later. What do you all think

My only advice is buy something you can get parts for.

I like playing with old equipment, it is fun to figure out how to make it work when needed. I hate having to work with stuff that is challenging to fix.

I would pass on the Ford. Its a rebadged New Idea or Owatonna
Small chance it might be the Ford 538 which is a rebadged IH 1190. A low acre NI or Owatonna would not be a bad proposition but yes parts issues exist. Don't need late model and fancy when it comes to NH. A pretty good 469 could be bought for around 2,000 dollars.

I wouldn't go with an Oliver, just too old. If you want AGCO, get a Hesston. An 1120 is a great machine. There was a CaseIH equivalent, but I don't remember the model number.

I think I might fix up the IH your using. Would landlord let you use it after you fix it up. If you buy the parts and do the labor then tell him you will buy it at the end of the season. If you do the 10 acres neighbor two cuttings cut, rake and bale at $85/hour you will make enough to pay for haybine in one season.

I used to mow with a 990. Anytime they come up here guys tell what a good mower they were. The chain and sprockets were worn on mine. I never fixed it but I remember planning on it and it wasn't going to be tough. The conditiong roller set up on them was the best in the industry.

He would let me but he said if someone offered him what he wants he’d sell it to them. I’d buy it but it’s just not worth what he thinks it is. I haven’t made an offer. So i might start with that

If you hit the neighbor with an $85/hour price, he'll let the hay stand.

Probably expecting it done for $7.25 an hour or a dollar a bale or something ridiculous like that.

Really, old haybines are all over the place and are a dime a dozen. How broke are you that you can't find a halfway decent New Holland, which parts actually exist for?

I bought a used Ford 535 9 footer a few years ago for $1700 from a used equipment dealer. Put a new belt on the wobble box, redid the hydraulic cylinder packing, and replaced one of the (stretched) drive chains. Biggest problem was replacing the belt but it wasn't a game changer to replace. Had a couple of JD 9 footers over the years, forget the model numbers (1209s ?) and a NH with a closed drive shaft (a real bummer), but I like the Ford better and it works like a new one.
