Head gasket condition in kit

Afternoon everyone,

Started throwing the new head gasket on my farmall H this morning and noticed a bend at an edge of the gasket and some denting on another end. Is this good to run with or should I just get a new head gasket. I have a Case/IH dealer maybe 15 minutes away. I attached some pictures. Also gasket isn't lying perfectly flat. Maybe a 1/16 inch worth of rise towards the middle. Opinions welcome.

See no photo. Assuming copper over asbestos original type.. Small rise is no problem. Bend, et cetera, depends on what gasket is doing g in area. Combustion press could be trouble. Water seal , less so. Dry, bolt area you can probably just use it. Forgiving g application. Brush tack type sealer is proven.

One bend is at the outer edge. A 1/4" from a copper seal for a water passage but at the outside edge of the gasket. Then there is a faint bend on the other end closest to a stud hole and 1/2" from the edge of the cylinder but it is a small depression not even deep enough to catch with your fingernail edge.

Don,t sweat the phone thing. Fancy phones are mostly for jailbait anyway. As to above, not ideal, but sounds usable. A coat of brush tack and a baby spot of permitex 2 IF ya have a dimple and you are good as new. 1-4 inch from coolant is a mile. I,m not now recommending g, but these gaskets have even been reused a OK. A double retorte and clean, oiled studs or bolts more important. Rock on.

Be nice to know which gasket u have. The old style with the 2 metals on the outside or the felpro composite gasket. I hardly think it’s going to hurt a thing to use it. It’s a gas tractor with low compression. And once torqued and retorque fit will be flat. Lol.

This is traditional style gasket with metal outer layers and the center material. Ive used them before with good luck but this is there first time getting one that was a little dinged up.

It's a distillate head too, So spot on with the "low compression"

Are cylinder fire rings OK? And the coolant ports OK? If so, the gasket will work. Clean head surface and block real good. I use K-W copper coat, spray both sides good, torque down, .run, get HOT and retorque.

I suppose it’s all about how bad you want to do the project again. I also got suggestions similar to above from the company that sold me one for a g that you could see a crease in.

Sure with enough copper coat it will probably work. But none of the rest of us have to do the rework. There’s a difference between it doesn’t maybe lay quite flat and being able to see where that bend actually is I would not put that on my tractor or a customers.

I agree. If I thought there was any chance it wouldn’t work correctly I would not use it. Judgement call. I personally don’t like doing things twice.

Well he is a man who had a chance to keep his money in his wallet a second time it’s free to get a new one at this point just have to visit the shipping department.

And if he have more money than he need he probably values his time slightly unless there’s some race to get it done like it was promised to Timmy for Christmas

Unfortunately that you failed to understand my question. I referred to a garentee. You referred back to your get a new gasket argument Any new gasket, realitive to a serviceable and cosmetically damaged gasket does not a garentee make. I,ll dumb down the concept a bit. You may argue for the fresh gasket. No engineering type reason advanced. Why stop there? Head bolts or studs are only mostly reusable. Would you reuse? Then the head. It is possible that the head can somehow Crack due to stress of reuse. Exact original placement can not be insured. Then the block. It is possible that re used threads may fail. Would you replace same? New block should gain fresh crank. New crank, new flywheel. The flywheel may gain a fresh clutch. Now, at this point, should some degree of reliability not be gained by a replacement virgin transmittion? Axle? Hubs? Tires? Et cetera? It may be argued the a man,s life is made of a series of best guesses. Risk and rewards. Get it? For all that it is now known, any replacement may be internally compromised relitive to the slightly marred original. There are no garentees, just an opinion sought, and advanced.

I don’t think I’m going to win the argument here but we are talking about a new gasket damaged upon receipt likely by shipping. Any of the other parts you referenced if I just purchased them and they are NEW UNINSTALLED and arrived damaged in my hands I’d also send it back and make the company that sent them try again.
