head gasket

I am replacing head gasket on my 8n should i use sealer or not and what you recommend I have a metal gasket

I would get a Felpro head gasket,If you use the metal gasket spray it on both sides 2 good coats of copper coat sealer.

Copper coat or aluminum paint also works well. I have used a used metal head gasket by heating it in a oven and using the aluminum paint and that has worked well. Have one tractor that I did that to and it has been running just fine for 4 or 5 years now

If either sealing surface isn't really good I'd use a spray on sealer. I'm partial to Chrysler's spray sealer. I've used it on many MLS head gaskets without any issues.

Hey G have you ever tried the Aluminum paint as a sealer??? I did on the BA I built and even used a used head gasket to boot and that was 4 or 5 years ago and it hasn't leaked a drop yet

Yep , most part stores can get you a top of the line Felpro gasket the next day for about $15 .

Copper coat spray is underrated , it leaves a nice uniform coat and unlike spray paint , it leaves a tacky film of adhesive with the fine copper powder .

Copper coat will lightly bond the gasket to the part to form a seal in conjunction with the mechanic pressure . I have used spray paint in the 80's and it made me feel good . When the head was removed the gasket was not stuck and probably would have sealed just as good with nothing . A dab of Indian Head around the water passages would have been more helpful in my opinion.


EDIT . Yep , no copper coat on the fel pro head gasket . I would not use any thing on a new head gasket . Water pump , timing cover , fuel pump get Copper coat in my shop . Intake and heads should seal on their own or there is a fitment problem .

Copper coat is for lazy folks... :lol: The same lazy folks that despise anything that requires work to remove but go crazy with copper coat glue in a rattle can...

What ever you use you will need a sealer on the head bolt treads wipe'en with permatex are spray'em with copper coat glue....

I prefer a metal gasket but have used all that's available with success... The general consensuses is to use a Fel-pro gasket NO SEALER needed but as usual the local's will manage to fudge the factor recommendation up of no additional sealer needed and apply what makes them feel good... Maybe they think it makes them look smart... This group can dream up some neat stuff....
I realy liked the recomdation to put the head gasket in a shake and bake bag and put it in the oven... I will give him credit that was a first he owns the rights to it :lol:

I've used aviation gasket sealer for years,as well
as Indian head gasket sealer.

I have never used Indian head gasket sealer but spec its the same thang... I have built a many $10K and up 2 cycle boat motor what I listed was good enuff for them it should seal a N head gasket and does..... Sealing issues are installer error most all the time... Unless its a Chrysler...Chrysler knows it I know it and anyone that has ever worked on one knows it... Replacing those gaskets does pay well tho... :wink:

I may be the odd man out here, but I put them in dry.
I seal the bolt/stud threads with high temp RTV.
I also go back and re-torque when hot though. YMMV.
