Head issues

I bought a 960 2 years ago. I STRESS the fact that I am a IH man and I don"t know a thing about fords. When I bought this tractor It was supposed to have a bad head gasket. I sent the head off to get checked out, In the process the shop got flooded so that head is at the bottom of the Cedar river. I am now trying to build a new head from scratch. I ordered a new cast head off a internet site. I also ordered a valve kit, all chinese garbage. I had to go to a ford dealer to get the retainer washers and intake seals. Today my father and I tryed to put the head together. Got the exhaust valves done without a hitch, but the keepers for the intake valves don"t seem to want to lock up when put into place. Anybody else run into this?? Am I missing something? Like I said my old head is missing so I have no reference to fall back on.
Thanks for any help, Seth

That was 2 years ago, Cedar Rapids IA. I lost the radiator out of the deal at another shop too. The original head turned out to be junk, lot of cracks and 2 burnt valves. I'm just saying I don't have it for any kind of reference on parts I might need. Every head I found for sale comes with guides and seats. When you order a valve kit all the kits come with 40 dollars worth of guides you don't need, but no retainer washers. Bought a gasket kit but didn't come with the oil seals for the intake valves. Luckily a friend who seems to know everything about every tractor reminded about them. I'm not impressed with the Chinese junk I received, the keepers didn't feel like they were even fitting right Thats why I was wondering if anybody else had trouble with this or is it just me.

If you have valves and keys from the same source that don't lock together, what's posting here going to do? Get on the horn to the seller and make something happen. If you want to know if others are having the same problems, post the source of the parts. Someone will post back with their experiences with that company, I'll bet. You give us nothing to go on, you'll get nothing back. Sounds like having an extra set of valve guides lying around is the least of your problems.

The reason I am posting on here Rick B is I am looking for someones experience. I posted every part I bought and every step I did today hoping someone might see if I missed something. So I don't know what I could of left out Rick. If the fact that I didn't say the valve kit was a ' Tisco' kit really screwed you up that bad I apologize. Also to answer your witty statement about 'getting on the horn', I plan to do that Monday during business hours. And yes I do have bigger problems then valve guides, I'm not finding any detailed information such as a itemized parts list for this head. I'm guessing all I need are better guides I was looking for different possibilities to why the intake valve keepers won't seat.

Did you get 4 of each type of retainer washer? The intake is different than the exhaust. Intake washer on the right in this picture.

John Smith8N dont want to big arguement but the retainer on left is intake and needs another part that goes inside for keepers. The right one is for freeturn style using halfmoon keys with caps.

to John Smith 8n, Yes I picked up these washers today, The bags had the same part number on them so I didn't know which on was which. We tryed both washers on both valves. Later we found a cut away pic. of the exhaust valve setup on a website and they showed the washer you posted on the right as the washer to use. They worked good. We couldn't find anything for the intake valve. But yes I bought both types of washers. Thank you for your help. Seth

You're right, I should have said exhaust on the right, not intake.

Did you get the 4 sleeves that go inside the intake washers? You'll need those, too.
