head stud lead washers

What purpose does the lead washers serve on the head studs. They are mashed into obliven so what purpose do they serve
 
My opinion is they help prevent galling the cylinder head when torquing down the head nuts so they get a more accurate torque. Some will say they prevent coolant from leaking into the oil. However if there's coolant behind the nuts then it means the stud is leaking around the threads in the block which isn't supposed to happen.

All of this is up for debate though.
