Head Studs on CASE Crawler

Im am putting my Crawler back together this weekend. While removing the head, I wrecked a few head studs. I was wondering if I could use bolts instead of studs? Or is that not recomended?

Yes, you can use bolts, BUT, you can expect some problems. First, your replacement bolts must be strong enough to take the torque. Also, they need to have the right thread. Length can also be a problem since the original studs usually thread all of the way into the block, and it will be hard to do this when trying to torque (and re-torque after running) a bolt. Also, threading them in only a little bit will not cut it. The holes will probably break out. You need 1.5-times-the-nominal-diameter of depth for full holding power. The holes are not usually threaded deeper than 2-times the diameter, so you only have a small ammount of adjustment to get it right. Also, studs ususally have a coarse thread on the end that threads into the block and a fine thread for the nuts. This makes them easy to torque, since you torque them by turning the fine-threaded nut.
As a result, you will have to go to a specialty fastener supplier to get ones that will be strong enough, have the right thread, and be the correct length. You will then need to do some fooling around with thin washers to get the bolts to thread in at the right depth. The bolts will then be a pain to torque, and your bolts might bottom out when you re-torque the head after running. Thus, in my opinion, you would be better off buying studs than messing around with bolts.
