Heating time

Does anyone know how long a Farmall C approximatly takes to warm up? (Until the Water-temp gauge starts moving?)

With a 2-12 plow behind it in the ground about 7-8",Id say about 1/4 mile of furrow. Sitting in one place maybe never. Tosee it move with no load put a plastic bag over the grill! then take it off when satisfied. JimN

hmm, I thought I'd never move when just running without load. I'm just wondering when I can switch from gas to kerosene...

If you're wanting to run kero you should have shutters on there otherwise you'll have a hard time getting it warm. Unless you're working that tractor at least fairly hard you'd better stick to gas unless you like engine rebuilds. If the engine isn't hot enough the kero will wash the cylinder walls and dilute the sump oil. Just driving it won't get it warm enough. Hope this helps, tractorsam

Jim and tractorsam have it. That block is slow to warm up, waterpump, thermostat or not. My SuperC (pump and stat) doesn't warm up any faster than my BN (straight thermosiphon). Even When I run my SuperC just to keep it up, especially in the winter, I'll close the shutters to warm it up more quickly. On the BN, I throw a sheet of newspaper or a plastic bag over the grill and let the suction of the fan hold it in place. Not as effective as the shutters, but it has the desired effect.

My 1951 H never would get to run on the temp guage.I added shutters this winter and it is functioning properly.

Unles you have a blockage of the radiator or low water level it will not move , likeVito said. The guage is at the coolest part of the cooling system. The only time I ever sy dad's C get warm at all was ne day when I was mowing and the water level was low. By then it had burnt the valve comver gasket!
