Help finding a seal

I am looking for a seal for an old belt driven governor. Shaft size is 7/17 in and OD is 15/16. I can not find one with the correct OD. Any ideas?

I don't understand the 7/17 part.
Browning makes a 2 part pulley. You get the enter part to fit the shaft, and then the outer part, which is the actual pulley. Where these 2 parts come together is tapered, and the enter part is split so when put together it squeezes the shaft, which allows some for a not so perfect shaft.
Grainger is one place where these are available.

Are you SURE the OD is 15/16"?

A seal I have used on those old governors is a John Deere part # T19564.

Dimensions...

Shaft Diameter 0.438 IN
Seal Outside Diameter 0.914 IN
Width 0.250 IN
Spring Type GARTER
Number of Lips SINGLE

If that will not work, an option would be to machine a thinwall sleeve to press into the bore, then use a common 7/8" OD seal.

I read your post and understood about a seal is what was needed. Then my feeble mind wandered to pulley. Sorry about that.

An SKF/ Chigaco Rawhide master catalog is a real handy thing to have around the shop. Lacking that you can check on line using the seal finder link provided.
A couple hints to keep you from ordering a part that wont fit. You don't measure the old seal OD to size a new one you measure the bore the seal fits in. This is no place to use a tape measure, the bore or the shaft, you need a caliper.

What I have always done when I had a hard to find seal was take it to my local auto parts store and have them look it up. All i have here is an O'Reilly's but at least here they are pretty good at finding things like that.

May I ask what the gov. was used on and who made it, Pierce, perhaps?

I still think the DEERE # I posted is worth a try, if slightly loose in the bore, a little epoxy would solve that.

Dead spot on Bob!

As best I can tell it is a pierce. I did a reverse p/n on Deere site with the number you gave me

It is on an early 1940's military style genset with a Willys flat 4.
PS have 2 on order from Deere

THANKS GUYS!

Sounds like the same genset I have ! Very good units. I have even ran electronics without issues. I got mine with only 75 hours run time on it. I forget how many now ? IIRC 185 hours ? Our power used to be out a lot. Mine the original gas tank and carburetor were removed before I got it. A natural gas carb. was put on it. I run it on propane. It has a mixture adjustment so it seems to work fine. Shame the original parts are missing because the rest of it is in super duper original condition. Always was stored inside. Would make a nice one for a collector.

I hope it works for you, post back and let us know!

There's such a tremendous knowledge base here, but none of us get it right all the time, and feedback will help someone else, perhaps YEARS down the road.
