Help finding parts diagram

I have a 1945 John Deere AR with the transmission in parts. I am looking for a manual with a diagram of how the gears and shafts go in. I have already looked at the free online manual from Deere, and bought a parts manual. Both only have pictures and listings of the parts, not an actual diagram of how they go in. I have also googled and searched archives at many different sites with no luck. Any help is appreciated.

Went through the same problem with my 51A. Called JD publications and the lady I spoke with said there is not a service manual they sell for these serial no. old tractors with the technical information you are looking for. I would imagine the original mechanics had a detailed instruction manual, but she said JD does not offer anything now. There is an overview they sell for "antique" tractors, but they have had too many complaints and would rather not sell it. I took pictures as the transmission was disassembled, then put the c-shaft and sliding gear shaft assemblies together on the bench comparing each part and its orientation to the view in the downloaded pdf file parts list. Ended up making a 1-3/4" dia dummy assembly shaft, one end threaded, to install the c-shaft because I just couldn't hold all the parts in place and slide the shaft in, seemed like a person would have to be squidward of transmissions. Slid the dummy shaft in from the left side, loading parts as it was pushed through the transmission, then screwed the c-shaft to the end of the dummy and pulled it back through, sliding the pieces on the c-shaft as it went along. Slider gear shaft isn't too hard, just follow the parts list. Replace the bearings that were completely shot. Items that are a shrink fit like the 4th-6th pinion under the tin cover, heated in the wifes oven to 500 deg and they slid right on.

I think you're probably using PC674 which is right for your tractor. Try looking up parts catalog PC675, which is for later A and AR tractors, the diagrams are better arranged in how they are assembled together, and the parts might be the same or very similar

This one is of a styled AR. About all you can do is study the parts and the picture and watch which direction they are in relation to the rest. They should go in the order that is pictured.

While it seems crazy, Deere never had a service manual for the A. There was for a B, which would be similar, and for a 60 (later), but none for the A. And while many people here do not like them, there is the I and T manual available. It may help you a bit more than the parts book. I'm guessing this site may have them for sale.

Years ago, I took more than one of those apart to replace bad gears. put them back together & when the box was empty I was done. Never had a Manuel.

Thank you all for the advice, this helps tremendously. Forty40, that is genius, hadn't got so far as brainstorming how I was going to do that. Thanks!!
