help for starter solenoid 8n

I posted several weeks about my 8ns starter solenoid, and i have tried everything i know and it still wont turn the starter motor. the only thing i know is , do i need a negative ground solenoid? the one i got has one(1) small bolt for a wire connection on the front it will only spark when i touch it to ground the other one i had i think was negative ground to start it any suggestions would be appreciated the started is fine had it checked and new brushes installed so thats not whats wrong, maybe wiring or something else

Gary,

Can you spin the starter motor by bypassing the solenoid? You can do this test by using jumper cables. Connectone cable to the battery terminal (negative on 6V or postive on 12 volts)and touch the opposite end of the jumper cable to the study on the starter motor.

A 8n starter solenoid does not care whether it is neg or positive ground. What it does care about is that the large cable from the battery has to be hooked to the correct large terminal. The small terminal that is hooked to the starter switch has to be pointed towards the block. The starter push button switch grounds it out which activates the solenoid.

I'll post this for you again. First, there is no 'negative or positive' ground solenoid. Starters don't care if powered positive or negative. Are you saying you only
have one wire connected to the solenoid? You have some mucked up wiring somewhere. Is it 6V/POS GRN or 12V/NEG GRN or EI? What are sparking the one terminal with -
your battery? A jumper battery? If you din't know what each wire does, why are you powering it up? That is the best way to fry something. here's teh info again ion 8N
wiring.

"... and i have tried everything i know and it still wont turn the starter motor. " Do you realize how useless that statement is? We don't know 'everything you know' nor what you"have tried". Ist guess, with our blank sheet, is bad battery or cables/connections. Cut to the chase and use good heavy jumper cables (no 16 GA junk) to connect you car/PU to the tractor starter motor terminal. Not to tractor battery, not to solenoid, but starter stud. Shifter in neutral. Report back.

Colin it will turn over when i hook battery charger to it (ive got a big one that will jump off) the only wires going to it is one to voltage drop to coil and a return from alternator it has a small wire hook up on front of solenoid and my old one you ground it and it would start tractor (is it a bad solenoid ive tried 2 ?thanks for reply battery good also

Can you post a photo of what you have?

Gary,

We can't really help you unless you do the diagnostics that we ask you to do. How do you know the battery is good? Did you test it by jumping from the battery terminal to the starter?

When you do this, post back.

Also, where did you get your solenoid from? The correct 8N solenoid is this guy:

It is unidirectional, meaning that it must be installed with the small terminal pointing towards the engine block.
