I have a for 8N tractor with an industrial engine. I need to identify this engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if it can be identified I need to find a manual for it.
The tag on the engine Says "Ford Industrial Engine" Type 4-28
Serial # 2858-C3CS.
Thanks.

Is it a 4 cyl flat head engine? If so, it will
have the same specs as a regular N engine. If it
is a 6 cyl engine others will help.

I looked up "Ford Industrial" in my vintage timing gear catalogs and it shows three 4 cyl motors, a 134 cu in, and a 144 manufactured between 1953 and 1976. There's also a 173 that started in '55 thru '76. All three motors use the timing gears for an NAA tractor. My guess would be that an NAA motor would be a close cousin.

I have one in one of my 8n's. The block is the same as a side mount dist block but it has a magneto on it. I will look for my data plate, it is here someplaace!!

Jeff........you do know that the 8N engine is a FLATHEAD engine, don't you? The 3-engines you quote are all OHV engines, first used on the NAA in 1953. ......respectfully Dell

Ford made all kinds of "Industrial" engines, like those in N's, NAA's, flathead V8's, flathead inline 6, overhead cam inline 6, etc.

yes it is a flathead 4 cylinder & it has a magneto. the problem I'm having is that i cant find a manual or a parts schematic for one with the magneto.

I have an 8N industrial with side mount distributor and it has no sleeves. Yours may not have sleeves. Other than that 8N engine parts worked fine when I overhauled it.

I used the FO-4 service manual when I overhauled mine. There are different types of magnetos and drives. What make of magneto do you have? Mine in WICO. war time mags were fairbanks morris I beleive.
The FO-4 shows the magneto drive.
Can you post pictures of mag and drive area? Both sides of the engine also if you can.

My block was a late model 8n side mount block with the front cover from a front mount to mount the magneto drive.

Mine has the thin steel sleeves. like you say normal parts outside of the magneto.

There is a scan of the original Ford Industrial engine over at the 'other' Ford N-Series Tractor site for free download. My email is open so feel free to contact me if you want more info...Tim 'PloughNman' Daley(MI)

I also have a 4 cyl ind motor.
It marked Type 4-12 serial 1494-K-1AR
Mine also has 8N D embossed on the side of the block
It also production tag which I can't make out the
date because there is a plate mounted over it.
It also came with a Wico front mounted mag.
Use of your FO-4 manual should cover just about all
you need except may be the mag.
