Help id block #310609

I have a block only with #310609 and it's a diesel. From what archives have posted it appears to be a 172 engine. Is this correct and why so many variations of the same size block?

310609 is a 172 ci 4 cylinder engine block used in the 801 and 901 series tractors in 1958 and 1959. Every time that the Ford engineers changed anything in the design of the casting, a new casting code number was used.

Thanks Sean, this engine has stripped gears both front and back. I noticed the balancer is laying inside the oil pan. I hate to think what all else is bad. I'll probably part it out.
