Help with’74 CAT D5

CAT D5 dozer 1974 model. Need help with decelerator pedal. Doesn’t return after it is pressed. Should return to the throttle setting. I’m guessing there’s a spring return somewhere but I’ve taken off all the floor plates traced the mechanism all the way and can’t see any kind of return spring. My service manual doesn’t show the throttle assembly. Anybody know what I’m missing?

Seems like there is a rod in front of the dash that tie it into the hand throttle
Some spring mechanism in that rod iirc
The rod is vertical not horizontal

You should be able to see the parts breakdown for your machine by the link below. At the top where it says select equipment go to that, then choose select by serial number will get you the most sure deal. Cat parts

The tapered horizontal thing that is cut in half is the telescope spring. The decelerator pedal operates it with a rod thru a lug welded to the side of it.

That complicated mess in view A-A is a one-way clutch so when the spring is compressed during deceleration, it doesn't disturb the setting of the hand throttle.

Thanks to Mule Meat for the diagram, so I didn't have to go look for my parts book.

To add, stepping on the decelerator pedal should NOT move the hand lever, if this occurs the A-A assembly will have to be removed and disassembled and cleaned as it is full of rust and dirt.... the little springs and sprags are seized. There is a little bushing in the cover for the short shaft, and if this bushing is loose it will hold the sprags crooked and they can't grip the housing and it still won't work when you get it back in there. This assembly cannot be sloppy in this little area.

My D5 is different, it has the decelerator clutch up at the handle. I got the linkage out and it is shot. Anybody have a good source for old Cat parts? Not sure my local Cat dealer can get one.

Ok, so Mule Meat 's parts image is N/A?
To be clear, is your decelerator on the deck or somewhere else? Also , when decelerating, does it merely just close the throttle, ie, take the control lever with it?

Start by calling Cat and see what the situation is. They also have a network of used parts to draw on. One of your purchases should be a parts book, will be much easier to find stuff in the future.
