Hey all i picked up my dads old 70 and its been siting for 6 years i drained the old gas out put new in and it fired rite up but there is slugey junk in the bottom of the tank any one out there have any ideas on how to get it out without taking the tank off ? any info will be great thanks

I used a shop vac once, made an attachment that would fit down in the tank and it worked pretty good. The rest of the stuff will come out and settle in your seditment bowl just keep it clean and before you know it all that stuff will be out

Why not unscrew the sedimet bowel and drain everthing out. Then rinse it more with some fresh fuel. You could screw an elbo into in where the sediment bowel is and use a hose to catch what you rinse it with. To drain the tank pull off the fuel pipe to the carb. and reverse it, now it sticks out the side and you can catch the fuel in a bucket as it runs out. I think a shop vac with a electric motor mean sparks in the motor and they might not go well with gas fumes.

Well, If you ever want to take the gas tank off, you can strap it to the side of a tractor tire and put 3/4 stones inside the tank. It"ll chatter in there and break more stuff loose. Works terrific. Then afterwards, you can shoot the inside of the tank with some phosphoric acid, then rinse, then coat the tank.

no vaccum cleaner! your asking for trouble. i like castrol super clean for cleaing anything. it works best full str=ength witout any water. water kills the action of it. drian as said and cut the tank off and fill with a gallon of super clean and use a brush that your wife uses to wash glasses with to swab it around; let it set as long as you like and then drain. pour some fresh gas in it to finish getting all the sper clean out. you can get it at wal mart. depending on whats in the tank and if its rusty or not will deterine what you need from there. have a piece of stainless steel screen that has a extra fine mess to it. i roll it up like a cigerette and then stuff it down in the inlet hole in the sediment bowl. this will aloow stuff to settle around the inlet opening but not run over into it. leave it sticking up about an 1 or 1 1/2 inches inside the tank.

! lucky to have your life ! electric motors produce lots of spark inside & lots of static in a vacuum too ! dumbest thing i've ever heard. maybe u threw a match in first to "test" it? & see how flammable it still was. dont mean to offend but when it comes to safety, if its this blatant, so be it.

You dont offend me, your opinion means as much as a piece of toliet paper going down the toliet. Why would I use a VAC on a tank with gas in it. Drain it first, do I have to break it down so people like you dont get a stiffy thinking they get to bust someone out.

You must be stupied! next time I will go into detail so you will understand. I will break it down for slow people like yourself.

DRAIN FUEL, FLUSH TANK or just let it dry and then you can use a VAC.

The ONLY way to correclty fix this issue is-- just see what RobMD said below. Any other approach is less than a band-aid solution.

I sure you where thinking the right way but some people around here you have to break it down Barney style for them. DRAIN THE FUEL FIRST. That is just common sense and if that had to be said you dont need a tractor for all those safety first kind of guys

I don't think that you understand what he is trying to tell you.A empty gas tank is much more dangerous that a full tank because of the fumes. The best thing you can do is pull the tank and take it to a radiator repair shop and have them boil it out.

I understand do you? He said he did not want to TAKE THE TANK OFF. So I told him a way I have done it in the past with a empty fuel tank. Get the gas out and the fumes will go away sooner or later.

You will just have to rig up something small enought to get all through the tank
