Help with tractor expense

I have a friend who own a MF 50 and a 5' bush Hog who has offered to mow about 10-12 acres for me. It has grown up and is 3-7' in height mostly flat with some hills. What would be a fair price for both of us to mow this down?

I don't know but I would cut and bale it for free if I got the hay. I would ask around if anyone wanted to cut and bale. no cost to you and they win.

Making some big assumptions that it's "hay." At 7ft tall it's not going to have much feed value no matter what it is.

I'm not sure the friend will be able to get through it with his little MF50 and 5ft rotary mower.

Pricing "custom" work like this is difficult. Costs are different depending on where you are, who you are, what you are operating with, what your goals are... Is doing this for fun? Maybe he'd do it for the cost of a tank of gas in the tractor and a new set of blades for the mower. Is he taking time off work to do this for you? You need to be paying him what he could be earning by working, plus fuel and the cost of a new set of blades.

Guaranteed he is going to have A LOT of hours into this... 10-12 acres, 5ft at a time, with a 38HP tractor... He's not going to get it done in a day.

Do not and will not mow anything except my own property. That said, i figure it cost me a minimum of $50 hour to run my 90 hp tractor and 15 ft batwing mowing my own. Open, level ground in medium growth i can easily mow 3 acres plus an hour. This would be for fuel and wear and tear. IF i was doing it for other people i would not consider anything less than $125 hour. And then i would almost want a guarantee fron person that they would cover any type of tire damage that occurred.

A couple of thoughts/questions here…
You stated it’s 3-7 feet tall. Has it ever been mowed or when was the last time it was mowed? Is there a chance that there are items in the grass that could harm the mower, such as rocks or metal junk?
Just things to consider.

First off if there isn't anything in there then sign something that you will pay any damage.
If there might be something in there then have him stay home.
That being said I charge $85/hr from the time I leave my driveway until the time I return.

So I assume me thinking it shouldn't more than $350. is a bit rediculous?
I'm thinking your friend MIGHT be able to cover 1 acre per hour. Probably less, because this is presumably uncharted territory. Not being able to see where he's going, or what might be buried in the tall growth, he will probably be in low gear with his foot on the clutch.

That would be $29.17 an hour, TOPS.

500 bucks probably wouldn’t be unfair custom rate wise it’s 10 acres 50 bucks an acre

It’s not going to take you very long a Saturday afternoon

I would not do it unless you know there is absolutely nothing out there . That tall can hide a lot of obstacles that can do a lot of damage.

I would see if he can even cut the stuff. seven ft is some tough cutting if it is green, Dry grass not so much of a problem. Stan

You have a lot of quotes here but I have no idea what you are cutting that is 3-7 ft high. Grass , weeds or trees ? Don’t think you will be cutting 7’ trees for sure or grass. Get it swathed and baled or put some cows in there. , but still guessing on what you’re talking about ???

Impossible to quote without seeing the property, you couldn't pay me enough to drive my tractor blindly into weeds/ likely trees of varying sizes and any other obstacles such as rocks/old field equipment that never made it out alive. Not possible to figure what carnage could result from a maneuver like that nor the cost to recover from. jmho
