I just bought a J D 320 S 1956, and it will not idle down, I have had the carb rebuilt and it does the same thing. It runs at fast idle. The idle screw is about 1/8 inch from the stop when running. If I increse the RPM with throttle lever it will stall, why would it stall when I increase the RPM. How do I check to see if the govenor is working,
With tht throttle leve at the steering wheel all way down the idle screw is up and open and with the throttle lever all the way up the idle screw is all the way closed , with the lever all the way up the linkage to the carb moves about 1 1/2 inches back and forth. I do not no much about this so I need help. Charles [email protected]

I can't answer your question but I would suggest you buy the owners manual. These usually have information on adjusting carb and throttle linkage in them that is good to have on hand. Hope someone else can give you a better answer than that.

your governor linkage is out of adjustment. don't have a 320 manual but i have a "M" and sounds like the rod from carb to governor needs shorting. good luck, d.coleman

Adjust the governor to carb linkage rod 1&1/2 to 2 rounds short. Adjust the throttle to governor rod 1&1/2 to 2 rounds long.
