Here comes the cavalry .

I would think it would freeze solid in the long northern night and the solar panel would never thaw it out. Especially on cloudy days. He has live fire burning in there. I’d say that’s a little hotter than a solar panel.
Not solar for heat. but a pump that would activate when the cows wanted water. and them the water drains away again when they leave. There are lots of us in the cold north here that don't go make fire 24 hours a day to keep water from freezing. None are 100% fool proof and need to be checked on when you go feed. We have a variety of fountain systems in this area and everyone has it's good and bad parts. I know for myself I got sick of thawing fountains and making fire and have a better system that has not froze up in over a year. I do intend on putting in a couple other fountains next year and will be electric free. i have a friend that put in a soler pump system and has been working for him for 3 years with minimal issues. He is pumping from a dug out and the water drains back into the dug out when the cows leave the trough.

Interesting how fat your cows are in that kind of weather. You'd think all the protein in their feed would go to staying warm.
They will be calving in a couple months. Plus they have hay to eat all the time. And I give them chop. The one highlander has twins 2 years in a row. Others are red angus and one black angus.
