Hesston 1014 Drive

Hmmmmmmm... my first guess would have been one of the bearings in the swaybar mechanism... but you replaced all of them? The big one on the center sheave? The four little ones on the linkage arms?

... what's next...?
The tie rod on the end of the knife? Is that tight?

What about the four tapered holes for the lug bolt/nut heads in the bottom of the swaybar? Any slop there?

What about the linkages in the swaybar? Are any of the clearance holes egged out a little?

I've also heard chatter when there is a tight guard (or more). To check this, I will often run the haybine for a minute or so with the header locked in the up position... and someone else on the tractor, so I can wait right by the haybine. When they turn the tractor off... I get down there and run my hand along the knife. Any hot sections are running too tightly in the guards. (this would be way, way easier with a cheap thermal camera)

Lastly, what about the bearings on the main drive sheave itself? On my Hesstons, there is a grease fitting on the side of this housing. I assume that you're greasing this. But even if you are, look at the side of the header in front of the housing and in back of the housing... to look to see if there is grease being flung against it... this is a symptom that the seals/bearings may be failing in that housing.

1014 drive chatters in hay. Have changed knife ,guards and associated bearings. Checked and aligned by manual

When everything is running well...
the chatter is audible in light, thin hay. When I'm going along in thick growth, it sounds quiet.

When there is a bearing or something loose...
There is still chatter in light, thin hay... but it gets louder in thick growth.

I don't know. I had a 1010 hydraswing and an 1120. The half sway bar runs the knife off the bell crank. It attaches up at the top of the machine and pivots there. The bell crank sits back in it.

I tried to find parts diagrams online... Agco's website has abandoned the Hesston line.
 
It's on there. You must not be looking in the right place. 1014 center pivot, right? It doesn't have the half sway bar. The drive lays horizontal on those.
OK... if the drive lays horizontally; then it's different than the 1070, 1071, 1090 and 1091.

Yup... found it. It loads about as fast as loading a dumptruck with a thimble... but it's there. Thanks. That's a great resource. I've been stumped on some of this since the "local" (about an hour away) dealer sold out.
 
Changed pitman bearings several times. Even checked to see if there was special bearings. Castle nut on bearing never stays tight. If you overtighten knocks out bearing. Has broke metal where pitman mounts several times. Saw a picture of another 1014 with same breaks. Had a 14 ft 1014 and it never had this problem. Cuts alfalfa easy but ehen it sees fine hay it starts chattering like my dad used to say "loading the knife". Not like it is a heavy crop. Is poor.

My 1010 didn't like fine grasses either. The 1120 with the half sway bar was a vast improvement.

Know the twin knife ones were better. My 14 ft cut better than this 12. Was mint when I bought it. Agco parts books don't show original bearing part number. Knife head ball is worn a bit. Cuts and quiet until sees praire grass. Even at creeping speed pounds.

Between the two pieces of sheet metal that form the bracket for the swaybar bearing, there's a T shaped spacer/shaft. If this wears, you can have problems.

I'll get my book out, and also take some pics tomorrow.

You should be able to run in any kind of crop, at any speed, and not get pounding.

Also........look at the bottom of the sickle bar. It it's starting to look like a U because of wear, it will slam back into the guards when you get into the hay.

I'm a bit confused..............You say you have a 1014, but then you say it has a 12 foot sickle/header?????????????? As far as I know, the 1014 is a 14 foot machine. At least mine is.

For fine hay, you have to have sharp sections, and your guards can't have excessive clearance.

This is what they SHOULD look like. These machines will out cut a disc mower when running right. Not as fast, but they cover a wider swath at around 4 1/2mph. I can't wait to be able to use mine again. I don't like all the work required when using a disc mower. These babies are one-and-done..................cut, then bale.........no messing with raking.
 
Rebuilt knife with all new sections. Had good guards last year.. Changed knife and got set of new tieguards tha Hesston origianlly came with. Is lots of 12 ft 1014's. Are usually better cutter and usually don't break auger like 14 ft.. Have welded the pitman bearing shaft several times.

There's the shaft that comes out of the housing (#1 in the pic). And there's the arm (#2 in the pic)

This is a chronic wear part. The crappy bearings they use, don't really fit the shafts properly. Typical ag stuff........off the shelf crap.
 
Changed shaft. last year and new bearings. Auger drive shaft. New bearings and shaft in flywheel. Broke shaft twice. Replaced big bearing on pitman drive. Swaybar pin has been welded on top like most. Been running 1014's for probably 25 years. Going to make new knife today and replace knife head as bit sloppy.

The conditioner bearings will rumble if bad........or have a popping sound. If the rollers start to touch, obviously you'll hear it, and see it. Best way to check these bearings is using a pry bar to try to see if they're moving. I've replaced them once in the almost 30yrs I've owned the machine. I personally don't see any problems in these bearings ruining the pitman pulley shaft, or its bearings. The rollers are driven directly by the motor, prior to the sickle, auger, or pickup reel.

I'm starting at the bottom. Last time I ran the machine, I wasn't paying attention, and hooked a panel fence while crossing the creek. I finally looked back, and saw it. Didn't see any immediate damage. I'm not sure, but I think I hooked it with the ball joint. I noticed no problems during the day, until I stopped to oil the chains. At this point, I noticed that the machine was banging. The sway arm bearing had worked loose. The castle nut hadn't moved........there was just increased clearance between the sheet metal, and the sway bar pin boss.

Today was the first time I've looked at it in a couple of years. The pin seems to be in good order. The sway bar is still straight. BUT I'M ZONING IN ON THE SHEET METAL. ESPECIALLY THE LOWER PIECE. I'm seeing a possible depression where the boss contacts the sheet metal. My thinking is.......the ball joint snagged the fence, pulled the sway bar, and the sheet metal yielded. This radically changed the clearance between the two halves. This is where I'll look when I get around to removing the sway bar. It might just boil down to a heat job, or cut & replace the affected sheet metal.

The sickle operates without slapping, and was cutting fine. I will inspect the left side of the bed, and sickle end, when I get around to it.

Anything affecting the drive will begin at the top ball joint. Barring a mondo problem with the pitman arm that comes off the flywheel. I see nothing that can relate to your problems anywhere else. I'm surprised that the pitman case bearing shaft had problems........the belt drive isolates it from shock. I'm sure you examined the flywheel, and it fits properly on the shaft.

As far as any other "chatter", it might be originating from the auger, or pickup reel. Again.....use a pry bar to see if the bearings are bad. Might check your clutches while you're at it. They can freeze up over time, and fail to work when you need them. Way back in ancient history, I used to cut Haygrazer with this machine. The auger clutch took a beating, but protected the system.

Actually, I'm not sure what "chatter" is. These are noisy machines when running without load.

If you're trashing that pitman/flywheel drive shaft...............there has to be a shock, or imbalance. That's all I can think of.

IIRC, it was either on this machine, or my 1010, that I had to trim the sickle end to keep it from interfering with the high arches at the sickle end. Hell........it's been a while since I looked at the sickle, and can't fully remember how the parts were arranged on the left end of the cutting bed. If you run into something suspicious, I can look at it at a later date to compare notes.
