Hesston PT7 moco rollers

Hi, I posted this over at the Haytalk forum as well; no replies yet. Perhaps more success over here:

I've got a Hesston PT7 moco. The cable for adjusting the tension on the conditioning rollers is broken (not crimped; not a few broken threads; totally broken in two). I can't figure out how to access the cable to replace it. The operators manual is no help. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? is there a shop manual available? Also, should the rubber top roller be replaced at some point? Ours is cracked and dry.

Thanks,
Paul in VT

Paul,

Is this the older model with the spring and cable underneath the frame, or the newer one with the spring and cable across the top?

If it is the top mounted spring, there is a square shield, like a long skinny box, bolted under the top of the machine. If you unbolt that you can see the spring and its attachment to the cables. The last time I messed with that was awhile ago, and I can't remember what the attachment looks like, but I am pretty sure I cobbled up something rather than going to the dealer for parts.

As far as the roller goes, drive it until it drops. Replacing it will be with used parts, unless you are made of money.

If you get desperate, I have a parts machine, and am also in Vermont.

Hi Hal, thanks for the quick reply. It is, as you call it, the newer model with the cable across the top (newer being relative I guess). I'll take a closer look this weekend. I think I know the "long skinny box" you speak of and couldn't figure out how to accesss it. I'm in West Fairlee, and you?

Paul,

I am in Rochester.

I think there is a row of little carriage bolts that show on top of the frame. As I said, it's been awhile. If I get a chance, I will go up in the bushes and look at it today.
