Hesston Support???

It seems that the level of support for Hesston has changed dramatically in the past couple of years?

Our two old haybines are both model 1070. I thought that I used to be able to search that model number on the Agco site and the Messick's site a couple of years ago.

The Agco site now does a brand filter before you can search for model, and Hesston is not included.

Did this change recently? I'm almost positive that I used to be able to search for Hesston on the Agco site???

I just checked. It's on there. Click ''Search by parts book'', then click ''Browse''. Next click ''Select brand''.
Select machine type, etc, I think you can figure it out from there. Your 1070 is on there.

Ah... OK...

It's been a while. I've been living off of parts that I got a few years ago, and stuff that I can get locally from our NH dealer, since they bought out the remaining stock from the Agco dealer that I used to go to.

I'm a little concerned. I'm using the last of my conditioning roll bearings that I have on hand from a little preventative maintenance re-stock that I did a couple years ago.

The bearings are standard spherical bearings, but there is a press-on piece that they group with them. It's a little shield that presses onto the bearing and protects it from hay wrapping around the shaft.

It wasn't originally in the design, more of an afterthought. Must be these bearings were wearing out early, and they added this little shield.

Well... now...I'm using the last one that I have. All I have to reference that shield is a Hesston part number, and I didn't see it in the parts diagram online. Either I missed it... or it isn't there.

It used to be something that the guy at the counter had in his system, when I went to the dealer... I'm not sure if the online system captured all of those little details.

I'm a little turned around... I like to keep one or two ahead of these parts. I don't like putting my last one on, with about 40hours of mowing left this summer... and no more on hand.

Is one able to un press and reuse that shield thing from the old bearings, or do they wear, or do they get wrecked in
trying to remove the old bearings.....

Paul, you missed the point, those are a standard bearing, and NOT especially made for that application and they don't have to be bought from Agco.

Hesston Agco 050328, Timken 1108KRRB.

Here's a link to a substitute bearing at Surplus Center.

Paul got the point. I'm not worried about the bearing. It's the little press on shield. I've had these haybines for eight years now. When I first started using them, I was replacing conditioner bearings far too often. About the third time I did it, the guy at the parts counter was like..."oh...you need the little press-on shield"

I replaced two bearings since like that, and they have lasted. And I had a third bearing/shield combination on hand.

Now... one of the conditioner bearings on haybine #2 went bad, and I'm using my last bearing/shield combination.

And, Paul got to one of my other concerns...these shields press on HARD. They make a 20ton shop press groan. I tried to cook the shield at 500F and freeze the bearing... and it didn't help much. I talked to our son-in-law, who works at a place that makes industrial food mixers...they put bearings and stuff on shafts all day long. His take? Bearings are standard, with respect to the diameter of the shaft they fit on. When it comes to anything else like things that need to press on the bearing or things that the bearings need to press into, variability of part tolerance between various manufacturers means that the guys at the shop are constantly chucking stuff up in the lathe to make things "press-able".

I personally have no idea why they press so hard. It's just there to keep hay away from the bearing. It spins free and bears no weight. Heck, it could just slip on and have a grub nut. But the option of pressing one off? Oy!

Also... any of the bearings that I've personally replaced... with the shield...haven't failed. My only recent replacements are old/original bearings or unshielded replacements that still remain... so I don't have a source for salvage shields.

So... the shield works... that's why I want to keep using them.

Bearings are cheap, the time/labor to replace them and mowing downtime is expensive. That little shield is worth its price...even if I have to chuck them up in my wood lathe to make them press-able.

I wrote down the Hesston part number... I'll have to see if they are available ala carte.
