Heston 6610 swather

Hello all, I have an opportunity to buy a Hesston 6610 swather, 14 ft header, metal crimpers/rollers, Perkins diesel. I have a few questions for the YTers who have worked with or knowledge of that swather.

Can you tell me the good and not so good about it?
Can I still find parts for it?

The anger tube is rusted out and will need to be replaced.

I ran an earlier version with the little gas Jeep engine. It was the deciding factor to buy a center pivot Hesston 1014 for grass, and a 1010 for Haygrazer.

My feeling was.............I don't need another engine, and complicated hydrostat system, to worry about. The pull behind machines are powerful, and easy to manage.

Your auger is the heart of the header. If it requires replacing, it can be a real mess. Dunno about availability of used ones.

Also.........it depends on what you're cutting. These machines shove the crop through a small conditioner IIRC. Cut a heavy crop, and you're trying to push a lot of material through a small window. Makes your day when you plug one.

We ran a Hesston 420 actually two of them one after we wore out the first one. They were a 14ft machine with belt drive instead of hydrostatic. We cut a lot of hay with them did some custom work as well. They had triple groove V belt that drove the header and crimper. If those were in good shape and tight it was pretty hard to plug the machine. You could cut some pretty heavy crop with them with no problem. Probably be forewarned, rusted out auger and age of the machine probably means it has seen its fair share of “field testing”!
