Re; the conversation we had regarding our 70G overheating coils then not sparking at all.
Replaced the $80 JD coil that wasn't supposed to overheat with a new $30 TSC coil...no spark...juice to the coil and out of the coil to the distributer, so I assumed condenser.
New tune up kit and wires from Steiner's, installed points, condenser, plugs, wires, cap, rotor...still no spark...damn...scratchin' my head, took it all apart again, cleaned the distributer again real well, reinstalled, rechecked point gaps...still no spark.
I had noticed that the electrical connector on the condenser wire seemed large and was installed in a way that to put it in correctly required a twist in the wire (which is short and didn't like that twist too much), the prongs were long enough that when it was pushed all the way on the stud, they were touching the distributer backer plate. Soooo, I ground the ends some and innstalled the connector with out the twist then bent it up a little so that it didn't touch the distributer wall and BANG she was running! Assumption is that the coil AND condenser had gone bad, the new condenser was shorting out through the backer plate due to the contact???
Then she started to intermitently cut out again. Found that the battery cable was floating around in the terminal end...cleaned and tightened that and all is well.
Thanks for the help...a lil more maintenence on my part (batter terminal), a little more attention to detail on Steiner's (or their supplier), and relocation of the coil, and hopefully this Saturday's plow day will be just that: plowing! Thanks again, Pete
