When I was a kid, Dad & Uncle were doing some farming together after Uncle's return from Navy Duty during WW II. Uncle had an H he bought with veterans preference. It had their new 24 picker on it when changing wagons, Dad noticed a strip of gear lube on the ground. It was coming from a hole in the bottom of the housing rubbed through by the bull gear. Local mechanic took the axle out & replaced the offending bearing through the PTO in the corn field after Dad & Uncle took the 24's elevator off. Put her back together & brazed the hole shut. Dad & Uncle were picking corn 48 hours later. My Cousins son still has the H & uses it to push snow.
