I drug home this 656 diesel today! It rolls over all I had time to check out so I know it not froze up! Guy parked it 10 years ago cause it was blowing water out the radiator! Assuming needs a head gasket but was thinking I should have the head checked out since its off by a shop! Any tricks you learned to improving these old 282s or things to watch out for? I never messed with one before! Thanks in advance!

Not The Tractor Vet, Just Jim. I would be very careful to inspect the sleeves at the top 1 inch of the bore. Cavitation and cracking from un treated coolant, and cavitation are issues to take care of now. Tiny little pits that go through the sleeve to coolant will force a undo/redo if they remain. Filling the block with food died water (plugging all outlets lower than the deck) might show a leak into the cylinder. Thinking out loud. Jim

Well yea they did have a tendency to puck head gskts. if they were turned up or if someone did not get the sleeves set wright . Now as fas as cavitation the sleeves set in a DRY block on them , BUT i have seen the block crack and the crack will also go into the sleeve . Yea it is a problem but can be repaired by boring the block and installing a repair sleeve then boring the repair sleeve to accept the org sleeve . since you are going to have the head checked and i assume by a good shop that they will check for warpage and dress the head and do the valves correctly . I am not sure with out looking if those valves stand out or they set in . When looking over the sleeves clean them with thinner or asatone real good and look for cracks around the top of the sleeve and any cracks running up and down between each hole . Then comes checking glow plugs . that at another time.

The only reason the sleeves in the D282 cracked was because they were not machined correctly under the flange.

I really like mine. The only change I personally recommend is the motorcraft glowplug upgrade. I've had mine in for a couple years now and they work great. Just make sure to use actual motorcraft glowplugs and not the off brands. You will need to rethread them and of course use anti-seize.
