Homemade grinder

This was once my grinder before getting a
8 inch Dewalt.
I put a wire brush on the Dewalt and
decided it was a Death machine.
It would grab things out of my hand and
removed skin from fingers despite the
fact I was wearing gloves. Even weldind gloves.

This low speed motor is perfect for a
wire brush. If you slip, it won't remove
skin. Rarely grabbing and tosses items.

So now we can figure out why you want gloves made of steel.
You are using the wrong tool!!!

New flash.
When using a angle grinder your hands go on the grinder.
Not the piece you are grinding.

If you need to hold the piece you are grinding you should be using a bench grinder with a proper tool rest.

No really my bad.
I was picturing a angle grinder the way you described it.
Only thing that grinder needs is some sort of tool rest to keep it from pulling the part out of your hand.

My brother used to service and sell Buroughs office machines, remember them? He got me an electric motor out of a old machine, I bought an arbor like yours, 6" grinding wheel and wire wheel and was in business. Used it for more than 30 years and still have it. By the way, I store my spare wheels and brushes in a coffee can. Perfect fit.

What did you expect would happen when you put a wire wheel on a 3/4hp, 3600rpm bench grinder?
You likely had to remove all of the guarding to get the fat wire wheel to fit.

P.S. a slower motor of same hp will do strip flesh off your fingers too. Maybe if you went to a 1/4hp your glove or hide would be able to stall it before it hurt too much.

At 71 I still have all my fingers. Never
been seriously injured despite all the
gloom and doom predicted from some people

Here's a couple of what I would guess are homemade grinders that my dad used. Not very good pictures but the bigger one had a continuous belt that ran from the big electric motor to the pedestal. One of these days I need to take them out of the barn because they are really in the way. As you might be able to tell there is a tractor parked where the belt used to run.

Vice Grips and heavy leather gloves are your friends when using a grinder of any kind.

In defense of Geo, I do not have a rest on my wire wheel, and have got my fingers in it.
