Hood Picker w/ Load Leveler

This was an easy weekend project last summer
prior to replacing the wiring harness and water
pump. It beats the cobbled together rods I've
used in the past.

7' of 1-1/2" square tube, a short piece of 2"
and some hardware. Got about $50 in it.

flembo, There is virtually nothing to using this. Connect the chains to the tractor: I never had headlights so I utilize the holes that were already there in the doglegs. The bent hooks go up in the back corners. Pick the hood up about 4" and loosen the 1/2" bolt in
the side of the 2" sliding square tube. Beat that tube until the hood is level. Tighten the bolt. Proceed with the lift.

What? why would anyone need anything like that? Well, maybe I am not quite as strong as I was the last time I lifted one. When was that? five years ago? Or maybe it was ten. Hmmmm, maybe I will pick up some tubing.

Showcrop, I could hobble out to the barn right now and take that hood off by myself with no hoist, no problem. But is that the smart thing to do when your 74 and have two bad knees which are the very least of my health problems? There are things I just can't do anymore.

PatrickB I like it I should fab one up. I have roped them up when working out under a shed its still a PITA. I pop the steering wheel off all I do it makes it go much nicer...

I don't have a problem with the steering wheel
being in the way on the 8N Hobo. I've had it off
before though, first time was horrible. What's
your secret for removing it?

(quoted from post at 02:47:43 12/24/20) I LOVE fabricating and making things.
But the most rewarding creations of all, for me, are tools.
You are proud every time you use them.
Great Job!!!

Thanks Harry, I know exactly what you mean

Patrick, it looks like perhaps you misunderstood my post?

Patrick,I like it its a good idea! It could also be used to pull engines with, tip em some or level them out with out all the crankin that some have for adjustment.

Nice job on making a lifter for your hood. There is a special satisfaction that comes from making your own tools. Maybe there is a way to add a threaded rod and crank to allow for easy tilt adjustment on the fly. This is an engine leveler I have with a threaded rod to allow balance adjustment.

Neat invention.

I use a "Y" shaped chain. Stick chain through the radiator hole with a long bolt to straddle the hole. use the two bolt holes in the top of the dash. Then
lift the hood up with the cherry picker. hard part is getting the front and rear of the hood to lift even.

I have a reprint of the Ford 9n shop manual. It shows a rather large guy taking the hood off by himself. He presses the grill against his stomach, grabs the
dog legs and just picks the hood up! Dad says men were stronger in those days and died earlier!

Thanks for the interest michford. When I built this I wanted it to be bare bones simple. It is. Suspended level in the air I can easily tilt the hood up or down, guiding it with one hand while operating the chainfall with the other.
I could train a ten year old kid
to take the hood off and put it back on.

Tractorguy 2, I've seen that picture your referring to, probably
had 10 gallons of gas in the tank too!
