horse pull sickle mower help

Can anyone tell me how to check and operate a horse drawn sickle mower? Also, what is the capacity in terms of cutting of them.

1. What is the lever on the right side of the seat for?
2. What is the little lever on the left side, by the gear, that can be pulled out and pushed in for?
3. How to inspect prior to purchase?
4. What can these mowers mow? Tall grass?

Thanks.

lever on right is to lift the blade. small lever is to level the bar once its on the ground. they aren't the best choice for anybody trying to mow much of anything, even if pulled by a tractor. what are you trying to do with it. play with a team a little will probably be ok. doubt if you can find any major parts, but might find rivets and section and some guards. never close your hand around any part of the bar and blade. anytime you touch it you do so with a open hand and then only on a flat part of the bar. the blade can shift and fall down at any second once you start to lift the blade up or let it down for transport.

most mowers will be three point hitch types. very few were made to hitch to the draw bar. what kind of tractor do you have? new holland made a nice pull type mower. others probably did to, but that one is the only one i've ever seen.

The three point hitch were in the minoraty, most were the trail type 1 pin hitch PTO mower. New Idea was most popular with the mower sold under the Oliver, Cockshutt, Moline name (all the same mower) next and IHC, JD, MF, AC all building the pull type

Where are you at? Location will make a big difference on finding one. I do have 2 for sale here in Ohio
