(quoted from post at 14:42:50 10/05/09) what have you done to increse the horsepower on your tractor?
First I went from an 8N up to a Farmall SMTA, about doubled HP.
Next, I went to a MF275. about 3X an 8N.

If you by chance mean increasing the HP of an N, I respectfully submit that you are p!$$ing up wind.

As JMOR siad, there is not much modification to increase Hp.The N's were designed to fill a niche between a couple of horses or mules, and a large tractor.---lha

I was told it was mostly a flathead limitation. You can't help the engine breathe easier with the manifold hanging off the side with itty bitty ports.

Does the N engine need backpressure from the muffler? Maybe a modified muffler might help.

Doug.......NO modified mufflers!!! Low-slung N-Mufflers need anti-backfire baffles to prevent grass fires. N-Mufflers are NOT restrictive like quiet automobile mufflers. But even automobile catalytic mufflers have been known to cause grass fires. You will gitt arrested and ticketed in California without a baffled muffler by the Wildfire Inspectors. They also check chain-saws and dirt-bikes, RTV 4x4s and scooters. ......Dell

davids 52: Dell got sidetracked when someone mentioned modifying the muffler which is a no-no even outside California. Especially true when straddling a windrow of dry hay or a thousand other places. Dell has a neat trick to supercharge that little N of yours with a 454 smog pump, a Jub carb and some brackets. Costs next to cheap.

The best thing to do is make sure you're getting all the HP your N is designed to give. Many simply need a tune up or carb work but I"ve found some that need a throttle linkage adjustment to get them to full throttle, still others need the governor spring replaced or "tightened" or governor work, it doesn"t take much, if these things are down a little in RPM in can make a big difference, a well tuned, good running N will do an awful lot more work than one that's a little off.

Not saying anything that hasn't been posted here before but it can be easy to overlook a few extra HP that are already under the hood, BTDT.

Here is how you double the horsepower of an 8N:
