HOT Exhaust

Just got the tractor running and the exhaust manifold and exhaust is HOT. I painted them orange and all the paint burned off and they are both now black. This within probably 5 - 10 minutes of running. Should the manifold and exhaust be this hot? Concerned

You may still have a timing issue, but I don't see you being able to keep paint on the manifold.

Dunk I can't be too far off on the timing. Sounds GREAT. If I am off it aint much at all.

Just worried I am gonna burn it up. If HOT is normal I won't worry about it. Smoking alot but I am sure most of it is paint.

Working under a good load bush hogging at dark, you can tell that my manifold is a a very low grade of turning red.

You can't tell it in daylight.

So they get pretty hot.

It will be hotter at the number 4 end.

Yep that is where mine got the hottest first.

I am about to post some videos to youtube so you can hear it running. I really think the timing is almost or maybe perfect. Do I need a timing light to set it perfect?

Chris........would it surprize you to learn regular tractor paint BURNS at about 300F? Castiron exhaust manifold will glow red at sunset. Its NORMAL. You can try BBQ stove paint. The only thing that doesn't burn on exhausts is "ceramic". ......Dell

Chris.......the 4-nipple frontmount engine ain't got NO TIMING MARKS like the 5-nipple sidemount with the teardrop cover over the tranny flywheel. Timing the 4-nipple is set on the kitchen table, (1/4" per picture) but there is a "field" adjust retard screw on the left-side for BAD GAS. Modern 88-octane no-lead is sooooo much better than 1939 70-octane gas that fooling around with the manual timing can retard yer timing and LOOSE POWER and raise exhaust manifold temperature. ......Dell

make sure the timing is correct and the advance is working. ALos make sure that the mixture is not too lean. both can lead to an exceedingly hot exhaust manifold and burned exhaust valves.

Can someone please explain to me how this is done. I have access to one from a local mechanic but he started asking me if I knew the timing, etc... and I was clueless.

With an induction timing light, clip the spark sensor on the #1 plug wire.

Clip the 12v leads to a 12v battery.

Mark the (I think) 4* BTDC mark on the flywheel with something bright.

Crank tractor, aim light at hole, pull trigger, turn dist. till mark on flywheel aligns with pointer.

I have no practical experience with side mounts, but that will apply to most any engine like that.

The other guys will straighten me out if I missed, or worded anything wrong.

BC:

It is normal for the exhaust manifold of an operating engine to be very hot. Unless you used VHT type header paint it is normal for the paint to burn off in a short time.

BC:

In times past I have posted a procedure for accurately static timing an engine without the aid of a timing light. Searching the archives for "static timing" should find it.

And iron starts to have that little red blush at about 800F and when an engine is really pulling hard at night at WOT, you can observe the red blush. So a 300F paint will not stay!
