I have an hour meter for my John Deere R. The meter face looks perfect, but when I hook it to a battery it doesn?t work. Is there anyone who can fix whatever is wrong with it? And by the way, Deere wants $324.74 for a new one!!!!

The R uses an hour meter like this. Doubt you'd get one for $20 at Walmart. It would also be interesting to see what you'd get from Deere for $325.

Mine didn't work when I got it either. I really don't remember what the issue was, but I managed to take it apart and get it working again. You might try posting on the John Deere forum. I believe there are guys that can rebuild original gauges. They could probably fix that hour meter as well.

The original hour (pictured by Jeff nwoh) is 6 volt. Evergreen Restoration (Jerry Trvka) has them, but pretty sure John Deere will sell you an incorrect hour meter for the big money. For those claiming to get the correct hour meter new for less than $20.....I'd like to see proof.

There are a lot of places that do instrument restoration for the antique autos.

I've never used one, but poking around in some of the restoration forums would probably get some referrals.

I doubt it would save any money, but at least it would be original and have time on it.

Do a google search for;

1954 Chris Craft hour meter - Hobbs pointer type

Click on the youtube video

Shows one running with the cover removed

Looks like the identical meter except for the name on the face.

You might need a watchmaker to fix it.

2X what Steve said. I once priced one out. I would box the original up and save it and install a low cost replacement.
