How do I know if my muffler needs replacing?

My 1952 8n is rather noisy even with earplugs. How do I know if it needs a new muffler or if that's just the way it is. Is there a way to inspect it? How and what am I looking for? Would a new muffler make a significant difference?

Thanks.

Take it off and see if it any noisier or not! Compare it with a different tractor, not your car!

Thanks. I presume that even if it was bad it would be even louder without it. I don't have another tractor to compare it with. Anyone else?

Don't know what you have for a muffler now. Is it vertical or horizontal? I've had both on my 8N and neither was so loud I needed ear plugs or any hearing protection. Right now I have a horizontal muffler/pipe that's been on there for for a long time and it's not loud. Probably came from Tractor Supply 15 or 20 years ago.

Go get a cheap TSC muffler and a new clamp. A good muffler should make your tractor quiet enough so you can hear your lifters clatter and your water pump whine!

It's horizontal and looks probably original so I'm guessing it's bad. I definitely need earplugs so I'll go get one from Tractor Supply. Even WITH earplugs I am deaf after using it. Thanks for all your advices.

f you can see through a standard rectangle shaped muffler end to end the baffles have blown out. If it has a Cheery Bomb or similar type you can see thorough it end to end. It's baffle look's similar to a cheese grader.

I just remembered that I have one of those USB boroscopes. I'll use that to take a look. Thanks for reminding me.

Later 4 cyl OEM mufflers are straight through with lengthwise rows of tabs that are punched out of the tube and bent inward at 90 degrees. They extend inward approx. 5/16". If yours is OEM looking through it should reveal the story.

Loud pipes save lives!

Just sayin'.... :D

If it's too loud for your tastes install a new muffler. On mine the noise is behind me, so I don't care.
