how do ID my dozer

Hi
I have an old dozer sitting out in the back forty,that hasn't ran in 30 years.
I have been told that it is a 1940 john deere, it has been painted over several times and I cannot find any numbers or any other identifying marks on it. I have not spent a lot of time looking , because I wanted to ask some advice on where to look for these numbers, I have been told to look on the engine block but I am not seeing anything...maybe the paint is hiding it

I had a 40c JOHN DEERE and the serie number was on left side transmission

If it where a 1940 jd it would be a Bo linemen it
would also have a hand clutch
